Project Overview

WHAT: Lumin is a web app that helps users improve focus, manage stress, and maintain mental wellness through personalized exercises, guided focus sessions, and habit tracking. It transforms overwhelming mental wellness routines into simple, actionable daily practices that users can access on any device via the web.

WHY: Many people struggle with stress, burnout, and difficulty maintaining focus in their daily routines. While 65% of adults want to improve their mental wellness, only 20% consistently follow a structured practice. Existing tools are often mobile-only, fragmented, or require multiple apps. Lumin addresses this gap by providing a centralized, accessible, and web-based platform where users can manage wellness habits, track progress, and engage in focus routines seamlessly.

HOW: Lumin empowers users through:

  • Personalized Daily Exercises: Web-based guided meditations, breathing exercises, or focus sessions tailored to user goals and schedule.

  • Habit Tracking Dashboard: Visual charts, streaks, and progress indicators for motivation.

  • Interactive Focus Sessions: Browser-based timers, audio cues, and immersive web animations to enhance concentration.

  • Optional Community Features: Users can join focus groups, share achievements, or participate in wellness challenges.

Success metrics:

  • Daily Practice Completion: 60–70% of users complete at least one exercise daily.

  • Streak Retention: Users maintain a streak of 5+ consecutive days in the first month.

  • User Engagement: 40–50% participate in optional group challenges.

  • Wellness Impact: Users report measurable improvement in stress and focus after 2 weeks.

  • User Satisfaction: Average rating of 4.5/5 for usability and motivational value.

Target Audience: Lumin is designed for college students, young professionals, and creatives who spend significant time on their computers and want web-based solutions to manage stress, maintain focus, and build mental wellness habits.

DESIGN PROCESS:

Empathize:
I conducted interviews and surveys with college students, young professionals, and creatives to understand their stress points, workflow habits, and web usage patterns. I mapped pain points and emotional triggers—like burnout, distraction, and web fatigue—through personas and journey maps. This research guided the design of web-specific features, like immersive browser timers, visual dashboards, and focus session layouts optimized for desktop and laptop screens.

Define:
Problem:
Users want to manage stress and improve focus but struggle to maintain consistent mental wellness routines due to fragmented tools, lack of guidance, and insufficient motivation.

Goal: Design a web app that helps users integrate short, personalized mental wellness exercises into daily life, track progress, and sustain focus, all in a centralized, browser-based platform.

Testing:
Participants:
6 (2 college students, 2 young professionals, 1 freelancer, 1 creative worker)
Tasks:

  • Complete onboarding and personalize their routine

  • Start a focus session on the web dashboard

  • Track progress and view streaks on the dashboard

Findings:

  • Users preferred large, clear dashboards for web vs. mobile → redesigned layout to leverage desktop space

  • Browser-based timers and audio cues improved focus → retained interactive session features

  • Users requested drag-and-drop customization for routines → added web-friendly customization options

Challenges Faced and Reflection:

Designing Lumin as a web app taught me that mental wellness tools must feel immersive, calming, and motivating in a browser environment. Key challenges included:

  • Balancing focus and engagement on desktop screens without overwhelming users

  • Designing web-specific visualizations for habit tracking and focus sessions

  • Creating micro-interactions that encourage consistent use without distractions

I overcame these by iterating on desktop layouts, testing audio/visual cues, and simplifying dashboards, ensuring that users could easily access wellness practices, track habits, and engage in focus sessions directly from the web.

This project strengthened my UX thinking and reinforced designing empathetic, actionable, and web-optimized experiences for real users.
